On 16 August 1968, the Munsiff court in Ganderbal was inaugurated and established. It found its initial home within a section of the Tehsil office in Ganderbal-Beehama. The inauguration ceremony was chaired by Justice Janki Nath Bhat (of Muran Pulwama). Several Munsiff courts were established during that month and year as part of the separation of the judiciary from the executive branch. The judicial powers previously held by tehsildars were transferred, leaving only executive powers with them. The land was procured for the court complex, approximately 200 meters away from the Tehsil office in Beehama. Construction commenced, and in 1972, the court was relocated to the newly constructed building.
The inauguration of the building was marked by a grand ceremony, with Justice Syed Murtaza Fazal Ali (the then Chief Justice of J&K High Court) officiating. The court’s jurisdiction covered the entire Ganderbal Tehsil, from Buchpora to Bal Tal, encompassing two revenue estates from Tehsil Srinagar: Gadoora and Haran. Various esteemed judges of the high court, including Chief Justices, visited the Ganderbal court for inspections and functions.
Subsequently, the Munsiff court in Kangan was established in October 1996, after carving out territory from Haripora to Baltal from the old Tehsil Ganderbal. With the formation of new districts, the positions of Sub Judge and Principal District & Sessions Judge for Ganderbal were created. The first appointments to these positions occurred on 27 May 2008, and 28 May 2008, respectively. Noteworthy visits and initiatives, such as Lok Adalats and the inauguration of Legal Aid Clinics, have contributed significantly to the development and accessibility of justice in Ganderbal.
